On Friday, my first shift at Wheelies starts with the owners Bloody Dollface and Coco Carnage showing me around. Yes, those are their preferred names. They’re really their roller derby names, but they like to go by them instead of their real names. I don’t even know their real names.

Bloody Dollface, or just Dollface for short, got her name because by the end of every game, there’s always blood on her doll-like face. She looks to be in her late twenties, and like she’s been teleported back to the fifties at a pinup photo shoot. Her platinum blonde hair is coiffed and sprayed to within an inch of its life in a style of large cresting waves and victory rolls. Paired with her big blue eyes and perfected killer red lip, I am jealous of her salon level abilities. Mine only reach basic levels of aptitude. Mascara, eye liner, and basic lipstick or lip-gloss. Anything beyond that and I’m lost.

Her partner in business is Coco Carnage, or Carnage for short. I asked why not Coco, and she said it was because it made her sound too sweet. Apparently, her name comes from her beautifully coco skin, and her ability to leave a trail of carnage behind her. Carnage is a chocolatey African American goddess with short, tight Shirley Temple ringlets threaded through with gold highlights. Big sparkly gold hoop earrings I would kill for dangle below her short curls. Gold is an amazing color on her and matches her bright hazel eyes. She looks to be a few years older than Dollface, maybe early thirties, but like a hot thirties. You can only tell she’s that old because of the way she carries herself. And because she has an eight-year-old daughter with her partner Asha that she talks about nonstop.

Both women are in excellent shape, physically stronger than most men I know (except for Henry—that man’s six pack could cut glass) and carry themselves with an air of confidence that comes with knowing you are one bad bitch.

They show me around the store and backroom, introducing me to two other employees, Jeff and Veronica, before giving me a thirty-minute lesson on the register. Which is one of those fancy new ones that uses a tablet instead of an old POS. Everything is meticulously organized and categorized, making it super easy to learn.

When I interviewed for this job last week, I had informed the owners I may not be here longer than a few months. They were totally cool with that since summer months are far busier than winter ones. They usually cut back on employees and hours when temperatures drop and snow covers the streets. Usually, people don’t like to skate on snow… or ice.

Once I’m vaguely familiar with the lay of the land, Carnage takes me to pick out a pair of skates and wheels. I get a fifty percent discount, and if needed, can make payments to cover the skates. I definitely need to make payments. Even at half off, these are the most expensive footwear I’ve ever purchased.
